Talking point: Hanwha played up existing connections between South Korea and Canada—from missionary doctor Oliver Avison, who helped bring western medicine to South Korea, to the heavily Canadian-made KPop Demon Hunters. Bids on the multibillion-dollar contract from Hanwha and its German rival TKMS were due earlier this week, but the public relations war continues. The two bidders have each lined up partnerships with numerous Canadian suppliers (sometimes the same ones), but TKMS had been ahead of Hanwha in announcing research and development deals with universities—in its case, with Western University, UBC and also Dalhousie.
