Firms that have proven they’ve had an especially difficult time coping with Canadian counter-tariffs on the U.S. or China now qualify for duty remission, the Finance Department announced Friday. (The Logic)

Talking point: Firms began applying for the remissions—which can get a company a refund or exempt it from paying tariffs—in March, when Canadian counter-tariffs were broader. Canada is now only levying retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and autos, and Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the idea of further counter-tariffs this week, as Canada continues to negotiate sector-specific deals with the U.S. In the meantime, the Finance Department said it would extend existing tariff relief for two months to Canadian companies on U.S. goods used in manufacturing, processing, or food and beverage packaging, and added goods used in agricultural production to the list. It also extended a tariff exemption on U.S. imports used for public health, health care, public safety and national security.
