Talking point: Dufresne has been the chamber’s law clerk since 2015, overseeing a staff of lawyers who draft legislation and manage the Commons’s legal affairs. Before that he was senior general counsel at the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The current information commissioner, Caroline Maynard, has been doing double duty as privacy commissioner since Therrien’s term expired last week (like Dufresne, he was a career government lawyer). Dufresne’s appointment to a seven-year term will require approval by the House of Commons and the Senate.
