GM CEO Mary Barra announced at CES that the retail giant reserved 5,000 of its electric vans, and that FedEx will buy at least 2,000 additional vans over the next couple of years on top of its initial reservation of 500 BrightDrop EVs announced last year. (The Logic)
Talking point: As companies like Lion Electric, Rivian and now Stellantis book electric van orders from Amazon, other delivery fleets are looking to GM’s new brand for their own EV needs. BrightDrop vans are slated to be made in Canada in a scrappy, startup-style operation. During Wednesday’s presentation at CES, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said it will use the BrightDrop vans to expand a delivery service where workers put groceries directly into customers’ refrigerators. BrightDrop vans include electric hand trucks and pallets that pop out of the van, which FedEx said Wednesday have eased the physical strain on delivery workers and sped up deliveries.
