Talking point: Canada has long wanted to expand access to India’s fast-growing market, but there remains relatively little direct trade between the countries. Canada exported nearly $5.4 billion worth of goods to India and imported just over $5.9 billion in 2024—less than one per cent of Canada’s total trade in goods that year. Talks for a trade deal were already stalled before former prime minister Justin Trudeau accused India’s government of orchestrating the 2023 killing of a Canadian Sikh activist in B.C. India denied the allegations. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand raised hopes that Canada and India were set to improve diplomatic ties when she spoke to her Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar last month.
