Calling the fight against climate change “our greatest economic opportunity,” the federal Liberals said they would make oil and gas companies set five-year targets aimed at making their operations carbon-neutral by 2050; put $2 billion into a fund to help Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador cope with the energy transitions; and aim to make Canada’s electricity carbon-neutral by 2035 (a CO2 cut of 61 megatonnes versus 2019). (The Logic)
Talking point: The promotional material for the Liberals’ climate-change promises says their climate plan “is a jobs plan.” The Conservative platform also includes a raft of climate-change promises (albeit in pursuit of a lesser target), so the two big parties are arguing more about how to cut emissions than whether. That said, incumbent Ontario Tory MP Cheryl Gallant took down a library of her own YouTube videos on the weekend, including one saying climate change “may be [Justin Trudeau’s] biggest grift.” Also Monday, Reuters reported that before the election, the federal government was working on plans for two major carbon-capture projects in Alberta.
