Talking point: Indigenous people are underrepresented in Canada’s tech industry and are paid significantly less than non-Indigenous tech workers, according to a 2019 study from Ryerson University’s Brookfield Institute. The four companies’ pledge joins other recent high-profile corporate initiatives to tackle systemic racism and a lack of diversity in organizations, including the BlackNorth Initiative. Launching such initiatives is much easier than affecting real change, however: an analysis by The Globe and Mail found the vast majority of BlackNorth signatories had made little to no progress toward their goals a year after making the pledge.
