Talking point: Hydrogen is a key part of Alberta’s emissions-reduction strategy, and April’s federal budget included tax breaks and funding for the sector. The federal and provincial governments will collaborate on the project. Some see hydrogen as a way to reduce emissions in sectors that are hard to decarbonize. Its production uses natural gas, however, and the International Energy Agency has called for an end to new investments in fossil fuels to avoid the catastrophic effects of allowing the climate to warm more than 1.5 C. Meanwhile, Canada’s three largest oilsands producers announced an alliance with the goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions for the sector by 2050.
