Talking point: Canadian military officials have already warned the government the firm’s technology could be a vehicle for Beijing’s espionage, and that its use could lead allies including the U.S. to limit intelligence-sharing. Though Ottawa is still weighing whether to allow Huawei’s involvement in Canada’s 5G networks, some telecoms plan to use its technology, anyway: Telus said on Thursday that it will use Huawei’s gear when it rolls out 5G later this year and BCE has said it’s open to working with the company. Scott’s warning comes as the U.S. doubles down on a campaign for its allies to ban the firm: on Thursday, it brought 16 new charges against the company related to intellectual property theft and surveillance, and on Friday, the Pentagon walked back earlier opposition to a rule that would make it harder for U.S. companies to supply Huawei with chips and other parts from their international facilities.
