Talking point: The company began moving more executives to Toronto five years ago, with an eye on the city’s role as an emerging artificial intelligence centre. It has been streamlining its focus on professional services, and gets most of its revenue from legal services, despite being well known for its Reuters wire service and roots in the Thomson newspaper empire. (Not all of its technology has been well received, particularly a data tool used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.) Meanwhile, corporate venture capital has boomed. Thomson Reuters’s chief strategy officer Pat Wilburn, who will serve as the fund’s executive director, said AI and machine learning are among the innovation trends that the new fund may pursue.
