The 12-year agreement on broadcasting rights follows the current one that saw Rogers snatch the rights from the CBC in 2013. Sports business site Sportico reported the deal first, followed by The Associated Press, each of them citing sources they didn’t identify. The current deal, which cost Rogers $5.2 billion, expires after next season. Rogers’ share price sank about 6.5 per cent Tuesday. (Sportico, The Associated Press)
Talking point: Rogers recently predicted flat revenue in 2025 and reported growing debt, even as it has sold assets to try to pay down debt it took on to buy former rival Shaw. It has been investing more in sports, however. That includes spending $4.7 billion to buy Bell’s stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns Toronto’s NHL team, so at least the Leafs’ share of the broadcast rights money won’t go into a competitor’s coffers.
