Talking point: Jordan Jacobs and Tomi Poutanen started Toronto-headquartered Radical in June 2017, shortly before selling their AI startup Layer 6 to TD Bank. Radical has been adding more partners as it raises its third, US$550-million fund; last month, it named Dominic Barton, former McKinsey global managing partner and Canadian ambassador to China, as well as Aaron Rosenberg, head of strategic and operations at DeepMind Technologies, to the firm. Li was previously a Twitter director for two years before it went private. She’s already an investor in Radical’s new fund, and their portfolios overlap. Both have previously backed two of the Toronto AI ecosystem’s most prominent startups: Cohere, a natural language processing platform, and Waabi, an autonomous vehicle firm.
