The RCMP has been monitoring some users’ activity on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms for at least two years, according to an investigation by The Tyee. The RCMP has also reportedly shifted to a “proactive” approach, which it said is meant to “help detect and prevent a crime before it occurs.” The software allows police to track activity by entering keywords. Talking point: Though the RCMP argues this type of monitoring can better help prevent crime, experts said it could involve the mass surveillance of citizens. Brenda McPhail—director of the Privacy, Technology & Surveillance Project at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association—said the RCMP’s refusal to release its policies around monitoring and information use is “insufficient and unaccountable.” McPhail also said transparency around the project would also ensure marginalized groups are not being disproportionately targeted.
