Talking point: Independent physicians have been advocating to join HOOPP for years, but weren’t able to because they were considered both an employee and employer of their practice, complicating how pension contributions are made. With about 24,000 incorporated doctors in the province, the change could significantly boost pension contributions at HOOPP. The fund manages about $112 billion in retirement savings on behalf of 460,000 health-care professionals, according to its latest annual report.
