Over 14,000 e-vehicles were purchased across the country through the rebate since it was introduced on May 1, according to Transport Canada. The agency also said overall e-vehicle sales have increased 30 per cent between January and June, compared to the same period the previous year. (CTV News)

Talking point: The program gives those who purchase certain e-vehicles up to $5,000 in rebates to bring the cost of lower-end e-vehicles closer to their gas-powered counterparts. It’s part of the federal government’s larger goal of increasing e-vehicle sales to 10 per cent of all vehicles sold by 2025, and eventually getting that figure to 100 per cent by 2040. But there is a caveat to the increase: of all e-vehicles sold between May and June, more than eight in 10 were sold in British Columbia and Quebec. They’re the only two to have provincial rebates, and they both allow people to combine them with the federal offer. Most importantly, the two provinces both have quotas on electric vehicles for dealerships, which, if not met, incur fines or require dealers to purchase credits from their competitors who’ve exceeded theirs.
