Talking point: For Wilson, the investment is personal. The 69-year-old billionaire was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) at age 32. He launched his philanthropy fund in 2022 with $100 million to back research and ideally find a cure for the disease. The treatment Epicrispr is developing aims to target the disease’s genetic cause, which leads muscles to waste away. The company—last valued at US$185 million in July 2022, according to PitchBook—plans to use the money for human clinical trials, with the first set to begin in New Zealand this year.
