Talking point: Canadian Tire has owned Helly Hansen, an iconic ‘90s hip-hop era brand, since 2018, when it bought it from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund for $985 million. Kontoor expects Helly Hansen to generate more than US$680 million in revenue this year. Canadian Tire, meanwhile, plans to use proceeds from the sale to shrink its debt, buy back shares and invest in growing its business. The deal comes as the retailer braces for a potential tariff war between Canada and the U.S., which could have ripple effects on consumer behaviour and its supply chains.
