Talking point: Socan collects licence fees and pays out royalties to homegrown and international composers and music publishers any time a song is played on radio, TV or stage, or in a bar, or streamed online, or laid over a social media video anywhere in Canada, says chief legal officer Andrea Kokonis. Socan says it’s found at least 150 cases in which Suno has generated tunes that replicate tracks from its songbook, both violating the copyrights it manages and competing with its artists. “We want to ensure that our members are paid when their works are used,” Kokonis said. “We also want to send a signal to AI services that there are consequences when they use music without permission.” Artists including Americana star Jason Isbell also sued Suno in the U.S. this week, claiming it generates songs that copy their voices and styles. In June, the firm raised US$400 million at a US$5.4-billion valuation.
