The Calgary energy and infrastructure company said it’s putting up $10 million in a “staged investment” in West Kitikmeot Resources. The company, controlled by the elected Inuit association in western Nunavut, is championing the port on the coast along the Northwest Passage and an all-season road meant to eventually lead to Yellowknife through land with rich mineral deposits. Talking point: The Grays Bay port and road are top infrastructure priorities for the Nunavut government; Prime Minister Mark Carney sent them to the Major Projects Office for fast-tracking earlier this month and has long talked about the project as a key nation-building effort. Besides supporting mines, the road would be Nunavut’s first permanent road link to the rest of Canada and the port could support the coast guard and navy.
