The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan led the all-equity round in the Kitchener, Ont.-based edtech company. The funding came through the pension fund’s tech-investment arm, the Teachers’ Innovation Platform. Talking point: The Series D adds to a spate of large raises in Canada’s venture capital ecosystem, fuelling a new cohort of unicorns in sectors like edtech, e-commerce and medtech that have benefited from the pandemic. The Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association recently reported that more venture capital was invested in the first three months of 2021 than any other quarter on record. On Tuesday, Waterloo, Ont.-based spacetech firm SkyWatch announced a US$17.2-million raise led by Ohio-based investor Drive Capital (BDC also participated in the round). California-based cleantech firm Heliogen attracted funding from Calgary’s Ocgrow Ventures, closing a US$108-million round Tuesday.
