Japanese parent company Seven & i announced a business restructuring effort that includes taking the 7-Eleven North American convenience store chain public by the second half of 2026. Seven & i has an outstanding US$47 billion acquisition offer from Quebec’s Alimentation Couche-Tard. (The Logic)
Talking point: Seven & i will have to prove that it can improve shareholder value more than Couche-Tard. The 7-Eleven owner has agreed to sell some of its subsidiaries to Bain Capital for US$5.37 billion, and named its first foreign CEO, Stephen Hayes Dacus. The company said it’s in ongoing discussions with Couche-Tard over antitrust concerns, and is exploring whether it could sell an “unprecedented” amount of its business to comply with regulations. Seven & i’s stock rose over six per cent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange today.
