Apple will open a downtown Vancouver office in 2020

The company will take up two floors in an office tower currently under construction at 400 West Georgia St. The futuristic tower will have massive rotating glass cubes inspired by Japanese paper lanterns, and is across the street from Amazon’s new office, also set to open in 2020. (Bloomberg)

Talking point: This will be Apple’s second Canadian corporate office; the other is in downtown Toronto. Apple already has about 500 employees in Vancouver, according to LinkedIn data, but this development could allow the company to have more employees on the West Coast. Apple’s announcement is the latest sign that Vancouver’s tech scene is attracting the attention of Silicon Valley heavyweights. Microsoft opened a corporate office in Vancouver in 2018, and Amazon’s forthcoming West Georgia office is part of a massive Canadian hiring push, with a target of 3,000 new jobs in Vancouver by 2022. In June, The Logic reported that U.S. food-delivery giant Postmates had quietly set up shop in the city. Executives from Amazon and Postmates have cited Vancouver’s strong talent pool as a major reason for their expansions. B.C.’s tech sector growth rate by metrics, including revenue and GDP, is at 7.3 per cent, the fastest in the country, according to KPMG.
