Such proposals will still be subject to environmental assessments, consultations with Indigenous Peoples and whatever provincial governments require, but not the more expansive examinations they’d get under the federal Impact Assessment Act, the Liberal government announced. The more specialized Canada Energy Regulator is also going to take over reviews of pipelines, major new power lines and offshore renewable energy projects from the Impact Assessment Agency. Talking point: The changes are meant to make reviews faster and more predictable, and focus federal attention on the biggest and potentially riskiest resource projects, said the announcement. At the same time, the Liberals began whispering that they’re backing off a plan to make it easier to approve projects over evidence they would harm endangered species.
