Sixteen auto manufacturers have agreed to work with non-profit Call2Recycle on an electric-vehicle battery recovery program in Canada. The program provides a phone number and email address that EV owners, as well as businesses like garages and dealerships, can contact to get their old batteries picked up for recycling or repurposing. Talking point: It’s an expansion of a pilot that Call2Recycle, which operates in the U.S. and Canada, started in Quebec in 2023. The non-profit already works with companies like Duracell and operates drop-off locations for used electronics batteries at Longo’s grocery stores. It collected 6.8 million kilograms of used batteries last year, a 17 per cent increase. Now, drivers of Teslas and Toyotas can also use the service. Some of the recycling will happen at an expanded factory in Ontario owned by battery-recycling plant EVSX, which added a new line for lithium-ion battery recycling in March.
