The kingdom stopped Canadian shipments at its ports, banned food and medication imports from Canada, rejected visa applications from Canadian citizens and delayed payments to Canadian vendors, according to a memo prepared for International Trade Minister Jim Carr. The actions were part of Saudi Arabia’s response to Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland tweeting support in August 2018 for the human rights activist Samar Badawi, whom the kingdom had jailed.
