Reddit purges pro-Trump community (and thousands of others) for hate speech violations


The site, which calls itself the “front page of the internet”, removed r/The_Donald subreddit as part of its ban on hate speech on the platform that has roughly 300 million users. Reddit also banned left-wing subreddit r/ChapoTrapHouse as part of its removal of some 2,000 communities. (The Verge)

Talking point: Though r/The_Donald has no official ties to the Trump administration, it has often served as an echo chamber for the president’s nativist and conspiracy-mongering excesses. Its users have espoused violence. “Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking people. The_Donald has been in violation of that,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said. The ChapoTrapHouse subreddit was removed for “violating Reddit’s rule against promoting hate.” Its users have similarly occasionally called for violence. The bans come as several social media platforms crack down on problematic content; Donald Trump’s Twitch account was temporarily suspended for “hateful conduct.”
